The School Yard Brawl
Has Google become the bully on campus? In the internet world there are some big players when it comes to internet browsing. Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari are the big names web surfing. Google has expanded its dominion from just a simple search engine into a media empire. Google has hardware, software, apps, and devices. Is it possible they aim to squeeze out competition to gain dominance in cyber space? This picture seems to suggest that this is a reality.
The picture is a hand drawn depiction of three school boys. The two bigger ones are fighting. The biggest boy, adorned in blue, red, and yellow is labeled to represent Google Chrome. He is choking from behind a boy just a little smaller than he. The boy being choked is dressed in orange with an orange tail protruding out from behind him. His hair is a fiery red and orange color. He is labeled as Firefox. The third child is much smaller, and seated in the background. He is not involved in the fight. He is dressed in light blue, with a blue, unstrapped helmet. Drawn on the helmet is the logo for Windows Internet Explorer. The child is depicted eating from a jar of glue.
This picture seems to suggest that Google, with intense tenacity, is grappling for dominance. All the while Firefox is giving putting up a legendary struggle. Is it really possible Internet Explorer has become the helmet wearing, glue eating, “special child” of the internet world? According to Michael Muchmore, Google Chrome ranked the highest with speed. The website is loaded prior to the surfer typing out the website in the browser. On top of this speed, minimalist design, and best support for HTML5(Muchmore).
This picture also suggests Firefox is a contender for the number one name in browsing, but Internet Explorer is not. Internet Explorer has been lagging behind. According to NBC, from November, 2010 to October, 2011, it dropped by ten percent in overall usage(Chansanchi). More and more people are choosing Firefox or Chrome. Chrome still showing as the front runner.
Internet Explorer is drawn in the back drop of the picture. This is to show that it, as a product it has drifted from the foreground. It is not a contender. It also would give the understanding that it is less superior to Firefox and Chrome. More to support this claim is Internet Explorer is doing things that one would stereotype a “special child” might do: require head protection to protect from multiple falls, excising himself, and eating glue. The artist suggests that Internet Explorer is the mentally handicapped child on the playground.
Some may argue differently. The argument could be made not of quality, but the artists personal feeling. As the evidence does support the claim that Chrome is superior to Firefox, and internet explorer, the artist may feel it to be superior by personal opinion. Our interactions with products can be very different from one person to the next.
There are many products to browse the web not portrayed in this picture. The big three that many Microsoft uses navigate the World Wide Web with are Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Chrome appears to be the big kid on campus. Google’s Chrome continues to dominate the competition, while Firefox contends for first place. This metaphor of school children fighting resembles the free market economy we live in. One in which a great product can compete with another, and lesser product fade into the backdrop.
